Master Chui’s Study
WHO
Chui Pui Chee
WHAT
The solo exhibition takes on the theme of ‘New Year Qinggong’ and turns the gallery space into the Hong Kong artist’s personal study. Referencing vases from the Palace Museum, which have elegant colour tones and subtle ‘an hua’ patterns, the meticulously-drawn paintings portray a selection of flowers and vases packed with literary allusions, demonstrating refinement and sophistication of the scholar’s study.
WHY
The exhibition not only showcases Master Chui’s exquisite ‘gongbi’ painting techniques, but also highlights his meticulous study of Yuan Hung-dao’s masterpiece, ‘Ping Shi’. Chui’s attempt in continuing the literati culture with a personal touch conceivably presents itself as a new form of modern Qinggong painting.
