Lyrical Encounters
WHAT
The exhibition is a special selection of over 30 artworks by artists originating from both European and Asian continents. The first group of artists originate from China, having received training in traditional Chinese ink painting and calligraphy (as well as Western art) in pre-war China. Drawn to the Abstract Expressionist movement in Europe, they moved to Paris to develop their unique styles. On the other hand, the group of featured Western artists have also in turn been deeply enchanted by Eastern aesthetics as well, with inspirations that derive from Asian practices such as calligraphy.
WHY
As an exclusive curation for French May 2023, the selection explores the rich artistic discourse woven together by some of the most celebrated French and Chinese artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. United by verve and flair, the presentation features modern and contemporary virtuosos deeply influenced by both cultures. The paintings offer a visual feast of two cultures, which intertwine and float together in harmonious lyricism. Audiences will be familiar with big names such as Zao Wou-ki, Chu Teh-Chun, Georges Mathieu, and André Brasilier.
