Lucas Arruda – Qu’importe le paysage

April 8 - July 20

WHO

Lucas Arruda

WHAT
A true master of pictorial gesture, the Brazilian contemporary artist (b.1983) has developed his work around light, consistently depicting landscapes and taking a rigorous approach that leads him from figuration to abstraction. This is the first monographic exhibition at a French museum devoted to him. The presentation coincides with the occasion of the 2024 France – Brazil season. It is also echoed by a simultaneous monographic presentation of the artist at the Carré d’Art in Nîmes.

WHY
As the artist describes, ‘Light is at the center of my work. It is movement. It is light that guides my painting, which creates intensity and finishes by creating spaces that are neither abstract nor figurative.’ Although small in size, the artist’s paintings are imbued with dramatic tension – each brushstroke is decisive, and paradoxically monumental to the small size of the canvas.
