Lightness of Being
WHAT
In this exhibition at the gallery’s specially-curated space – Kwai Fung Salone – four female artists discuss the concept of light and lightness as both a physical property and a state of being. Inspired by Milan Kundera’s iconic ‘The Unbearable Lightness of Being’, which discusses lightness versus heaviness, the artists each present their own unique perspectives on the philosophical concept of light.
Rachel Garrard uses her spiritual practice as a foundation for her discussion of lightness, while Aigana Gali assesses lightness by using shadows. Eleanor Johnson references history and mythology for her discussion, while Kristy Chan reconciles eastern and western cultures as her lens of analysis.
Visits are by appointment only via the link here.
WHY
Curated by Claudia Cheng and featuring artists from the east and the west, the exhibition shines light on a universal conversation. In a world that can sometimes feel overbearing – looming with dark clouds of the impending environmental crisis, increasing social divisiveness, and the uncertainty of political climates – art offers reconciliation, and the exhibition invites viewers to ultimately feel lifted by these paintings. Fans of Milan Kundera might feel particularly inspired by the works through the metaphors that the works present!
