Lee Jin Woo
WHAT
Adhering to the principles of minimal gesture, formal repetition, and humbling physical labor, the Paris-based Korean artist’s art extends from Dansaekhwa, a movement that emerged in the 1970s, including renowned Korean painters Park Seo-Bo and Lee Ufan. Immersed in traditional Korean aesthetics, his works embody philosophical inquiry and artistic intuition. The exhibition also features Lee’s calligraphy-based drawings on hanji paper, exploring themes of concealment and temporal passage.
WHY
The artist’s works reveal rough surfaces with dimensional relief, evoking geological formations and the passage of time. These serene compositions are rooted in a direct connection to the mineral world, and provoke a sense of emptiness and presence through marks and erasure. Through abstraction, the artist aims to induce a meditative state in viewers, while his labour-intensive process that utilises charcoal and hanji paper results in artworks that exude a sentient and ‘breathing’ presence.
