Kimiyo Mishima
WHAT WE KNOW
Having witnessed the destruction caused by the war, and experienced overwhelming information floods post-war, Japanese artist, Kimiyo Mishima, projects her emotions onto her work. When Mishima’s mother objected to her aspirations in the medical field, she began pursuing an artistic career. She joined 2 different art associations through the 1950s-60s, and was further influenced by the Gutai Art Association to which her husband belonged.
WHY WE LOVE IT
Although large-scale collaged oil paintings are Mishima’s most iconic works, the present exhibition also features her latest ceramics pieces. Commenting on our rapid yet mindless consumption of information as well as our deteriorating environment, Mishima replicates waste items such as discarded plastic bottles and paper boxes in her ceramic works. Her practice pushes us to consider environmental concerns.
