James Welling – Thought Objects, Italy and France
WHAT
The third exhibition of the contemporary American photographer’s works, his newest presentation embodies his evolving quest for discovery. The new photographs were made in the spring of 2024 during a month-long residency at the American Academy in Rome, and encompass a myriad of themes. The images whose meanings detach from the photograph’s nominal subject suggest multiple readings.
WHY
An artist widely acclaimed for his unclassifiable approach to photography, Welling has worked with the materiality of the medium since 1975. After using a wide array of analog photographic processes, he then turned to digital technologies in 1998. Deliberately over-saturating certain areas of the photographs, and altering light and shadow in others, these interventions create a visual experience in which the architecture is both subject and material for transformation.
