INTERSECTION
WHAT
The exhibition introduces the works of three artists from different parts of the world, who make sculptures using different materials such as wood, ceramics, and paper.
Julio Anaya Cabanding (Spain) reinterprets the works of the great classical masters by painting on discarded and deteriorated cardboard. This results in the decontextualization of those rigid structures established within the art world.
Ryan Schneider (USA) focuses on creating sculptures primarily out of wood using chainsaws, chisels, paint and other tools. Inspired by the various natural elements and lifeforms, he employs the foundational tools of his painting practice in his approach to sculptural forms.
Kazuma Koike (Japan) ‘s art encompasses the theme of ‘fictional ancient artifacts’ where his artworks are created by mixing images from different places and periods, changing their purpose and meaning. This stems from Koike’s practice where his interest is ‘the state where different elements coexist in harmony’.
WHY
This is an exhibition of non-conventional sculptures, by three artists with vastly different practices who all challenge the canons of art history in their own way. In using new mediums and employing unconventional tools, they all call into question what we truly value in art. The exhibition is refreshing in this sense, and also lets us appreciate the artists’ wit, humour, creativity.
