Ink Alchemy: Beyond Tradition

March 20, 2023 - May 15, 2023

WHAT
Featuring 15 Chinese artists of different generations, originating from Hong Kong, mainland China, and the US, the exhibition seeks to highlight the changes in Chinese ink painting over the last half-century. The presentation is divided into three sections: ‘Landscape Reinterpreted,’ ‘Bird & Flower,’ and ‘Abstraction’. Adopting innovative materials and ways of creation, the artists move beyond tradition, while still maintaining qi – the spiritual energy of ink.

WHY
The artists of the ‘Landscape Reinterpreted’ section transform ink landscape paintings with new mediums, materials and composition, responding to their reality and imagination through the context of human feelings and literary culture. In the ‘Bird & Flower’ section, the curated works reinterpret the theme of flowers on their own with a plain background, emphasising the ultimate delicacy of the blossoms, which viewers have yet to notice. Finally, for the artists in the ‘Abstraction’ section, fascination of their art is no longer limited to pictorial space but also their roots in their reconstruction, concern about the state of the world, and the existence of oneself. In all of the sections, viewers will find that the artists’ varying backgrounds display the evolution of Chinese ink painting over time.
