WHAT
The world-renowned German artist (b.1945) is known for works that explore the themes of German history, mythology, and the human condition. Throughout his career, he has created a diverse range of artworks that include large-scale paintings, sculptures, installations, and photographs. This exhibition surveys 4 decades of the artist’s landscape paintings. Capping a year of exhibitions across Europe and the United States, this is the first show featuring his works in Hong Kong for over ten years and the 13th solo exhibition of the artist at the gallery since 1998.

WHY
Central to his practice from the 1970s to the present, Kiefer’s visually-stunning landscapes have always been rooted in the symbolism of creation and destruction, history and memory, enveloping the viewer with rich colours and thick layers of paint, straw, and other materials; they include inscribed allusions to poetry and mythology with various depictions. While some of these extremely textural paintings represent land that has been burnt or barren, others envision lush growth and seasonal transformation.
