WHAT
The exhibition showcases the avant-garde Japanese artist’s (b.1931) works from the 1950s to the 2000s, complemented by a selection of works by the artist and his fellow compatriots from the Fluxus movement of 1960s New York. Widely known as the ‘rainbow artist’, the vibrant colours have become the artist’s signature style, and the show encompasses a wide range of mediums including paintings, prints, sculptures, and installations. His practice explores the universal motif of the rainbow in ever-expanding constellations of forms, ideas, and moods, driven by his unflagging humour, curiosity, and imagination.
WHY
The exhibition inaugurates the museum’s new ‘Pao-Watari Exhibition Series’ of monographic exhibitions on significant figures and moments within Asian art history. Celebrating A-yo and his unique visual language as well as signature rainbow patterns, the presentation is a testament that art should be accessible as well as relatable.
