His Own Worst Enemy

November 24, 2021 - January 8, 2022

WHAT

On view in Asia for the first time, five sculptures from Hirst’s ‘Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable’ series are presented alongside another new series of paintings titled ‘The Revelations’ (2021). The works from the former is based on the fictional discovery of an ancient shipwreck, weaving fantasy, mythology, and history. Cast in bronze, marble and granite, the works reference classical sculpture. On the other hand, the latter takes its name from the Book of Revelation in the New Testament. The abstract gestural works employ a rich, dark palette of charcoal-coloured paint that is relieved by small dashes of bright colour.

WHY

No matter how you might judge the controversial works of Damien Hirst, they are always worth seeing. Presented in Venice in 2017, five sculptures from the ‘Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable’ are shown in Hong Kong for the first time. We’re also excited to see ‘The Revelations’, a series that has been compared to Hirst’s ‘Veil Paintings’. Employing the pointillist style the artist has been experimenting with, the series sees Hirst continuing to engage with the emotive effects of colour; each panel in this dark series is built up from a specific colour palette, which the artist personally favours.
