Gangcai Encounter – The Art of Hong Kong Porcelain Painting
The group show is a showcase of 90 pieces of Gangcai artworks containing both traditional and contemporary elements, presented by 8 Hong Kong Gangcai artists. The diverse cultural medium of porcelain painting came out of Guangzhou as ‘Guangcai’ and was developed into the Hong Kong artform ‘Gangcai’. The local artists strive to spark interest of the younger generation in the artform by painting modern Hong Kong themes while keeping traditional techniques. Their hope is to strengthen the connection between the artform and the Hong Kong people.
Gangcai has developed amazingly in Hong Kong over the past century through its showcase of diversity and cultural exchange between the East and the West. This has resulted in a unique Hong Kong style of hand-painted porcelain. The golden age of Gangcai has become an important economic sector in Hong Kong, besides being a truly gorgeous and historically developed artform.
