Forging the Wild
WHAT
The Gen ‘Z’ contemporary Chinese artist (b. 1995) began to create the series of figurative floral art in 2018-2019. His artistic practice focuses on the use of cool tones and reconstruction of lines, guiding viewers to re-examine the conventional perspective of flowers. As his first-ever Hong Kong solo exhibition, Liu’s new works recreate the bouquet in his mind, breaking through traditional perceptions and boundaries, and reconstructing them with his own distinctive artistic language and form.
WHY
This is a show that challenges viewers’ long-held perception of objects, redefining beauty with floral in the dark. Vibrant, mysterious and dynamic, Liu’s identifiable flower-inspired works gradually disappear, their delicate petals and stamens replaced by sharp, angled lines and bold colours. The works possess a unique dynamism with the combination of blue, black and white as well as irregular reconstructed lines.
