Fang Lijun: The Light of Dust

March 4, 2023 - June 11, 2023

WHAT
The exhibition features 190 works of the acclaimed Chinese contemporary artist from the early 1980s to 2022. Using ‘Human & Figures’ as a theme, the exhibition includes four sections: ‘Passage: The Process of Growing Up’, ‘Introspection: Self-Portraits’, ‘Mutual Reflections: Friends’, and ‘The Light of Dust: Human’. The exhibition includes sketches, oil paintings, prints, ink paintings, sculptures, and even NFTs. The artworks not only showcase the artist’s sensitivity to the times, but also allow viewers to understand his reflections upon oneself, others, and societal relations, along with his experiments with a rich variety of media.

WHY
The title refers to concealing one’s brilliance to ‘merge with the dust’ – an idea from the Tao Te Ching. Nowadays, humankind faces challenges in geopolitics, the environment, and the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. All of these challenges test people’s judgement, tolerance, and empathy; and only by applying the said principle can we resolve the crisis by living in harmony with the world. The artist first engaged in introspection, then observed his close friends and various other individuals. He experiences and observes life with a temporal clue, offering viewers a glimpse into his inner mind, and allows them to resonate with him. Viewers are sure to enjoy this opportunity to experience the mind of the artist over 4 decades.
