Family Silver
WHAT
Silver is a unique medium that not only serves as a canvas for extraordinary craftsmanship, but also tells stories that revolve around history and culture. This is a landmark exhibition featuring 150 sets of silver from the museum’s permanent collection from the 18th to 20th centuries, featuring works by masters such as Robert Garrard, Benjamin Smith, and Paul Storr. Focusing on heritage, design and craftsmanship, the pieces are presented through nine categories: lighting, writing, dining, display, toilette, coffee and tea service, alcohol service, vanities, and Asian silver.
WHY
You’ll be amazed at the extraordinary craftsmanship and artisanal creativity of the master silversmiths presented at this exhibition. Highlights include a recreation of a Chinese-style reading and dining room that traces the evolution of Western dining traditions. In addition, two fascinating exhibits not to be missed are a pair of candlesticks from 1837 that was presented as a gift by slaves freed by the Marquis of Sligo in Jamaica; and a 19th century silver-plated tray with the coat of arms of Napoleon I (1769-1821), which tells yet another stunning story.
