Fabienne Verdier: Retables
WHAT
The latest solo show by the French artist (b.1962) is exhibited across the entire space at 13 rue de Téhéran and in the gallery’s newly-expanded space at 38 avenue Matignon. With her artistic practice having long been associated with the format of the altarpiece – a central panel flanked by two smaller, movable panels – the exhibition brings together a group of 16 altarpieces ‘retables’ (at avenue Matignon venue) and 5 large-format ‘walking paintings’ and new silkscreen prints (at rue de Téhéran venue).
WHY
Experimenting with contrasting colours, the artist distils from these panels a kind of personal anthology of her favourite artistic gestures. Against a lively, vibrant backdrop, her vigorous brushstrokes re-enact dramas with simple gestures, intensely meditated, and releases an energy that is almost palpable. The format reinforces the presence and intensity of these strokes, and its unusual shape invites audiences to physically enter the image.
