Erasing Time
WHAT
Having studied both in Hong Kong and London, multi-disciplinary Hong Kong artist, Sophie Cheung Hing Yee, is also known as a writer, poet, and disability rights activist. Her unique understanding of the world and of human rights issues leaks into her artistic works. At her first solo show, each of her works has the unique medium of being collages of rubber erasers that hold colourful rubbings of newspapers, which were completed during her time in London when she was getting her master’s degree.
WHY
The exhibition confronts pre-conceived misconceptions about the world around us. As a disability rights and mental health activist, Cheung undermines perceived boundaries and demarcations, inspiring agency and self-determination. The exhibition focuses on investigating states of ‘in betweenness’ or limbo, highlighting times of impermanence or uncertainty, and prompting viewers to reassess their perceptions and to better understand the new possibilities that arise when they do.
