WHAT
New paintings from the American artist are presented in her first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, where she explores the contemporary pop phenomena of Japanese media franchise, ‘Pokémon’. The artist first started exploring Pokémon when she debuted the character ‘Ditto’ in her 2022 exhibition at the gallery’s London location. In the current exhibition, each ‘card’ features a different character, containing elements of the artist’s cheerful demeanour. Colours and lines bleed together, revealing her improvisational process, where spray paint is first applied on upright canvases before they are laid flat for the application of acrylic paint thinned with water. Moving back and forth between several paintings at one time, the artist invites accident and chance into each dynamic composition through her quick actions.

WHY
The artist explores the world of Pokémon, which is based on rarity, and situates the characters into movement. She taps into a structure that corresponds with the contrast of contemporary painting. The framework of the paintings contains the characters’ constantly morphing bodies, ready to move and leap out into our world at any time. A fun and in some ways whimsical exhibition that will surely spark joy and nostalgia in some viewers – the exhibition will surely be a favourite amongst the younger generation as well.
