WHAT
In his newest solo exhibition at the gallery, the French artist displays a number of new autobiographical works depicting the places and things his life has been made up of. From the landscapes of the region he grew up in (Brittany) to the book and plants he surrounds himself with, Stosskopf’s colourful and vibrant series is an ode to his life and a bridge between the past and present. Self-taught, his way of working consists of collecting photos of personal elements (books, plants, objects) and works the balance of the paint digitally then paints his canvas in acrylic and oil paint on a canvas in linen.

WHY
The outright flattening of the works references the artist’s life as a graphic designer. It is precisely this sensibility that lends itself to paintings that are so vibrant, brimming with energy and joie de vivre. Skilfully mixing traditional themes and archetypes with a contemporary perspective, he constructs his works like collages. He uses saturated and vibrant colours, removing shadows to accentuate both their stylised character and their disconnection from reality. Moreover, ,his elevation of ‘mundane’ experiences and things to art inspires others to romanticise their life, realise the value in the things they interact with on a day-to-day basis.
