Deep Dive
WHAT
In this first exhibition in the Asia-Pacific region, the British-Nigerian artist presents a series of works, either oil on canvas or acrylic on board – orange-themed curvilinear paintings that depict near life-size figures. The artist draws inspiration from a number of influences, specifically from his heritage and background. His works are full of African, American, and European references, and he alludes to the myths and culture of his Yoruba heritage and the culture of Black-Americans.
WHY
Beyond his cultural heritage and background, the artist also draws inspiration from the 19th century Arts and Crafts movement, specifically the tile designs of William de Morgan. This movement found its roots in the overarching Modernist movement, which focused on combining human ingenuity with nature for a utopian future. The artist builds off this concept by using foliage as a motif for humanness and utopian-ness and in this age of technology.
