Deborah Brown: Silent Shadows
WHAT
In partnership with art advisory Arodite, 23 works of oil on canvas and panels from the Yale graduate are showcased, revealing the artist’s take on the everyday beauty of her native neighbourhoods. Through an adventurous play with light, colour and shadow, figures can be found passing in front of a variety of landscapes drawn from the artist’s past and present, from Brooklyn, New York – where she lives and works, to Southern California – where she grew up. Viewers are placed in the role of the protagonist, experiencing the visual, emotional, and psychological reality of daily beauty through the eyes of the artist.
WHY
The artist’s works are included in museums and private collections around the world, including the Portland Museum of Art in Maine, and the ICA Miami. In this exhibition, she is inspired by daily walks with her dog. Seemingly absent from the picture, she presents herself in elongated shadows connected by a leash to her canine companion, and conveys a visually and emotionally refreshing perspective to otherwise taken-for-granted habitual surroundings. Using a palette of heightened colours and abbreviated brushwork, viewers are sure to be transported into the paintings’ scenic beauty.
