Chu Teh-Chun in Hong Kong

October 21, 2021 - November 14, 2021

WHAT WE KNOW

Chu Teh-Chun needs no introduction. Raised in Anhui province, China (where he was surrounded by voluminous landscapes), the Chinese-French painter moved to France at age 35, where he lived for the following 60 years till his death in 2014. Acclaimed for his pioneering style of integrating Chinese painting techniques with the Western abstract style, his works are really expressions for his love of Chinese calligraphy as well as Western classical music. As a contemporary of Zao Wou-ki and Wu Guanzhong, auction records for his works have sky-rocketed in recent years, bringing attention to his artistic practice and its impact on modern art. The exhibition is presented in conjunction with ‘Georges Mathieu in Singapore’ at the gallery’s Singapore location.

WHY WE LOVE IT

As the inaugural show at the gallery’s new space on Queen’s Road Central, the exhibition is shown in conjunction with ‘Georges Mathieu in Singapore’ at the gallery’s Singapore location. It invites viewers to explore the symphonic dialogue between Chu Teh-Chun and Georges Mathieu – one that is about sentimentality, spirituality and musicality. Best of all, it is a nice finish to the series of exhibitions on Chinese-French abstract painters who have shown in Hong Kong in the past 12 months, across Hong Kong’s other gallery and non-profit spaces.
