CHIM PUM
WHAT
The Spanish artist’s new exhibition comprises a small suite of paintings and a bigger series of mixed media works on paper, marking his return to the gallery after 4 years since his last solo show. The title is from an unusual onomatopoeic Spanish expression and urban slang, ‘CHIM PUM’, which serves as the overarching theme of the show, translating to ‘THAT’S IT’ or ‘SHUT UP’. Also symbolizing the sound of explosion, fireworks, or celebration, the title also alludes to a range of floating symbols and sparkle-like forms that add a somewhat festive undertone to the images.
WHY
Originally imagined as visual representations of his own feelings and experiences, the artist’s iconic characters have become unmistakable. With oversized, watery eyes, they have evolved from drawings, over paintings, into sculptures and objects. They are little heroes who have just overcame something painful and are about to smile again after crying. As someone who likes finding or pointing at the silver lining in any given situation, the artist is indicatively announcing CHIM PUM, hoping for new, better beginnings to come.
