Cheng Tsai Tung / Chen Heng
WHAT
In this duo exhibition, the artists’ newest paintings are set up juxtaposed against a sample of their earlier works. Both of the artists have unique perspectives on the state of the world and it has an obvious effect on the artwork they create. Cheng’s works are mise-en-scenes showcasing the way he has processed his state of solitude and Chen’s latest series is titled, ‘The Unity of Man and Nature’, depicting the female form in a dual nature of non-movement and non-stillness. All of the paintings are contrasted by their earlier works, showing the change in their mindsets and skills.
WHY
Each of the artists works have unique ties to philosophy and consistent with their cultures, Chinese philosophy specifically. Cheng feels a connection to the ancients and uses adjacent forms of ink painting to showcase his melancholy and sensibilities. Chen emphasises ‘realisation’ and ‘transcendence’ in his art and he seeks to imagine these concepts in aesthetics that suit a Chinese context. For those interested in Chinese philosophy, this exhibition is perfect to see how two different people can interpret ideas differently.
