Boundless Union
WHAT WE KNOW
The exhibition showcases a series of landscape photographs by artist Bae Bien-U as well as ceramic Moon Jars by contemporary master Kwon Dae-Sup. Both artists, born in Korea in the 1950s, have dedicated their decades-long careers to creating art that relates to their homeland and employs different artistic approaches to embody the Confucian philosophies of unity and harmony with nature.
WHY WE LOVE IT
Shot in the natural surroundings of Korea, Bien-U’s Sonamu (pine tree) series of black and white photographs bring a calligraphic feel, giving viewers a sense of ‘Zen-seeing’. With milky colours and its anomalous shapes, the classical Korean Moon Jars resemble the elegance of the full moon, presenting the imperfections of beauty in a restrained abstraction. Shown together with different forms and subtle details, these pieces demonstrate a state of harmony that reflects the unique Korean culture, the Seonbi/Sunbi spirit.
