BLÄTTERRAUSCH II
WHAT WE KNOW
German artist Neo Rauch’s works are characterised by their unique combination of figurative imagery and abstraction, featuring his human and animal characters in familiar-looking but imaginary settings. They seemingly suggest a narrative intent, but closer scrutiny always reveals surrealist elements, prolonging the viewer’s gaze. His treatment of scale is disproportionate and nonsensical, often suggesting a dream-like existence.
WHY WE LOVE IT
As the second chapter of David Zwirner’s online presentation of Rauch’s prints, it features many of the artist’s recurring subjects familiar to his audience, such as a solemn man with a megaphone and characters practising juggling. In addition, this exhibition is testament to the artist’s increasing pursuit of lithography both as a medium and a genre, which has become a major part of Rauch’s artistic endeavour. Additionally, you can also witness scenes of Rauch’s creative process as he works in his studio, documenting his care and precision to detail.
