Birds on a Boat
WHAT
As Jules de Balincourt’s first solo exhibition with Pace since he joined the gallery in 2021, this is also his first solo presentation in Hong Kong since 2012. Known internationally for his colourful, radiant paintings that meditate on the social, political, and cultural dynamics of a globalised world, the twelve paintings in the show span landscape and figuration. Rendered in rich colours in small and large sizes, the works reflect de Balincourt’s interest in using the canvas to merge his own psychological landscape with external, global landscapes.
WHY
In his practice, de Balincourt often explores the relationships between humanity and the natural world. The artist imbues much of his work with mystery and ambiguity, which prompts audiences to find deeper hidden meaning. For example, several works in the exhibition feature groupings of the artist’s transient, nomadic figures situated amongst trees, coastlines, and other natural settings that possess otherworldly and fantastical qualities.
