Becoming
WHAT
The Chinese contemporary artist’s (b.1985) first solo show in Hong Kong showcases a comprehensive selection of his oeuvres from the past decade. Partially inspired by the Surrealist master, René Magritte, yet remaining true to his own unique style, the artist specialises in organising pictorial elements in a surrealist manner of wild fantasy worlds, creating distinct wonderlands between reality and imagination.
WHY
The artist often paints several series of works simultaneously, in which dreams and subconscious are a major source of inspiration. The exhibition title ‘Becoming’ infers uncertainty and infinite possibilities, which are important themes in Shang’s artistic practice. He aims to explore the relationship between personal growth and the influence of family factors with other complex issues to create a visual field of memory and imagination.
