Auspicious Dream
WHAT
An exhibition that covers two gallery floors, the presentation consists of nine of the Korean artist’s newest works. In the new series, the artist meticulously renders the nocturnal landscapes infused with sublime qualities: the vast universe, cosmic spirals, and lights. He uses a variety of different materials that pertain to traditional Eastern Asian heritage – such as aged wood and mother-of-pearl – that provide a juxtaposed perspective of art and nature within the modern context.
WHY
Exploring the idea of auspiciousness, the title of the exhibition focuses on the primordial awareness of magical forces in the universe that bring blessings and fortunes. For over thirty years, Kim has painted primarily on aged wood and eventually integrating mother-of-pearl. Despite the heavy limitations of these natural materials, he has always preferred raw, authentic portrayals of nature, demonstrating his affinity with Mother Nature. Continuously seeking new ways to represent nature and the timelessness of the materials by exploring the theme of Heaven-Earth and time-space, his works evoke a sense of wonder about the universe.
