Alicja Kwade: Pretopia

January 10 - April 6
Alicja Kwade

WHAT
The Polish-born artist (b.1979) is renowned for her sculptures and installations, and is celebrated for challenging scientific and philosophical concepts through her innovative use of materials. Her latest solo exhibition showcases 9 works spanning various periods of her career, along with newly-commissioned installations tailored to Tai Kwun’s F Hall. A highlight is her first site-specific installation in Hong Kong ‘Waiting Pavilions’, which features transparent glass bricks and large stones in the Prison Yard, linking the site’s history with its present. The exhibition is part of Tai Kwun Contemporary’s ‘Breakthrough’ series, spotlighting emerging artists through innovative solo presentations.

WHY
By inviting audiences to engage with abstract scientific and philosophical concepts, the exhibition uses materials such as clocks, mirrors, and rocks to explore new ways of understanding the world. The artist’s works interrogate social structures and reality, creating a unique environment that encourages viewers to experience time and space in a fresh, multiverse-like context. This exhibition promises a thought-provoking journey through the artist’s distinctive lens on reality.
