Michele Fletcher: Aftertime

January 15 - March 15
Michele Fletcher

WHAT
Through a series of abstract paintings, the London-based Canadian artist envisions a world where plant life reigns supreme, supplanting human presence and hinting at a transformed world order. The exhibition’s title draws inspiration from the philosophies of Timothy Morton and Michael Marder, exploring the intertwined existence of humans and nature, along with the vast expanses of geological time. The paintings offer a phantasmagoric realm devoid of human figures, where lush vegetation thrives with unchecked vitality, symbolising an enduring natural cycle.

WHY
Over the span of 2 decades, the artist has honed a process-driven artistic practice that involves channeling imagined imagery directly onto the canvas. Her paintings, created in a single sitting that can extend up to 12 hours, embody physical endurance and an intimate connection between artist and artwork. Through scraped, dragged, and dripped paint, her gestural brushwork weaves sinuous forms reminiscent of floral elements, reflecting a harmonious blend of expressive freedom and vibrant chromatic explorations.
