Adrift in Time
WHAT
Hong Kong-born and French-educated, the presentation of Chun Wai’s works is a series of photographs the artist took in France between the 1980s and 1990s. The artist’s main focus was on the finite quality of time and the effect it has, and this quality is visible in his photos. After being stored in a box for multiple decades, the quality of the photo negatives significantly depleted over the decades. Thus, through the exhibition – both advertently and inadvertently, Chun Wai is able to express how the passage of time affects us all.
WHY
This exhibition transports the viewer to 1980s France. It shows the way the passing of time affects us all, providing the viewer with elements of nostalgia and catharsis for times and memories passed. One important aspect that this exhibition touches upon is that the line between memory and forgetting is a blurry one; Chun Wai’s works allow viewers to explore these blurred lines, and to find beauty in the discovery.
