Absence of Gravity

June 30, 2023 - August 12, 2023

WHAT
The American artist’s second solo exhibition at the gallery is an examination of what it means for Black men to escape the boundaries of stereotypes in order to become their freest selves. The works create an open space for growth by showcasing pieces inspired by African folklore that depict men’s mental health. He also paints his human subjects as birdlike – using birds as a metaphor for Black men who live without the gravity of stereotypes. In addition, he uses colours as symbols – purple for uplifting and respect, grey for sophistication and intelligence, white for innocence and vulnerability, and burgundy for dignity and transformation. The artist believes that colour is what allows his subjects to take flight.

WHY

The artist’s works look past stereotypes, overcoming negative perceptions of Black men and mental health stigmas. He explores central themes of self-agency, brotherhood, and vulnerability, utilising negative space to add an element of ambiguity and to allow audiences to form their own views about the works. This furthers the artist’s deemed importance of the power of freedom. Audiences are encouraged to explore how the works’ deep symbolism resonates with them.
