BOLOHOPE

February 18, 2023 - April 6, 2023

WHAT
Beginning in 2019, the name of the experimental Guangzhou art collective, BOLOHO, comes from a Cantonese romanisation of the Chinese word for ‘jackfruit core’. Rather than targeting exhibitions and art institutions, Boloho’s work addresses the undervalued ‘art’ of many everyday practices, such as cooking, gardening, sewing, housework, and child-rearing. In continuation of the interdisciplinary practice during the artist group’s participation in Documenta 15 in Germany, their latest project BOLOHOPE, turns the expansive gallery space into a Hong Kong-style cha chaan teng (coffee shop), showcasing collaborative artwork ranging from paintings, texts, sewing, installation, and even a series of mini-sitcoms.

WHY
Don’t be overwhelmed by the colourful set-up and recipe-filled menus from places as far away as Cambodia, India, and China! Viewers are invited to sit in a Hong Kong-style cha chaan teng and to enjoy various catastrophic scenes of daily life through BOLOHOPE’s self-produced multi-media works of mini-sitcoms, paintings, sewing, texts, and material designs. Through earnest and humorous collective creations, the exhibition reflects the cultural imagination of the current generation of Guangzhou youth, depicting hope and anxiety, collective excitement and the breaking free from the system.
