How freely I can open up this space and time I am sharing
WHAT
An internationally renowned artist from Japan’s post-war period, the late Noriyuki Haraguchi (1946-2020) is most often associated with the 1960s movement known as Mono-ha, which means ‘School of Things’. Often using organic and industrial materials, Haraguchi’s artworks engage with political and environmental issues, expressing a precise attentiveness to their materials and spatial contexts. In the current exhibition, six of his works are showcased, bringing his unique worldview to the gallery space.
WHY
The title ‘How Freely I can open up this space and time I am sharing’ is a question that Haraguchi found himself pondering, before he succumbed to illness in 2020. The series of highlighted works in the exhibition showcases permutations of things, the disparate elements of which often reveal his spirit of rebellion against traditional values in a minimalist manner. The exhibition invites the viewer to look closely at how the artist accurately embodied the ideas behind his practice, provoking reflection and meditation.
