WHAT
Cerith Wyn Evans continues to explore perception through the transposition of form, presenting new installation, sculpture, painting and sound work. Conceiving the gallery as a form of ‘vernacular temple’, the artist draws on several key moments of Modernism, namely from Frank Stella’s (b.1936) ‘Black painting’ series, and Lucio Fontana’s (1899-1968) ‘Concetto spaziale’ aesthetic.
WHY
In the ground floor gallery, a new group of ‘After Stella’ neon sculptures of suspended panels form semi-transparent ‘pictorial’ veils, obscuring and revealing other works in the exhibition. In addition, the two large gongs in the gallery play at regular intervals, layering the exhibition with oscillating sound. We love how all the works in the exhibition speak to each other in a conversation that is activated by the presence of the viewer.
