Nam June Paik Solo Exhibition

September 24, 2021 - October 23, 2021

WHAT WE KNOW

Known primarily as the founder and pioneer of video art, the artist was born in Seoul and made his home through Hong Kong, Japan, and Germany, until his death in the United States in 2006. A true pioneer and visionary, the artist had predicted that the East and the West would one day be joined through media, communicating with each another in real time. Drawing upon a future where humans, technology, and nature could be in perfect harmony, he presented a world of their co-existence. The exhibition presents several drawings by the artists to accompany the other multi-media works, giving an insight into his state of mind and artistic practice.

WHY WE LOVE IT

The exhibition makes us examine the impact of video art, and to question its ‘ready-madeness’. Is video art ready-made, or is it really an art of ready-made representation and reproduction? Paik can be likened to Marcel Duchamp (who started the concept of the ‘ready-made’), as he transforms the cold attributes of a machine into something warm and personal, based on his own philosophy. Curated by Yonni Park, this exhibition continues the artist’s legacy and validates his philosophy, by providing an opportunity for audiences to communicate with his works.
