Bewildered World
WHAT WE KNOW
Angela Hui Hoi Kiu is an emerging Hong Kong artist known for featuring everyday objects as art motifs. She bestows new meaning onto these items by taking them out of context to give them new purpose, making us question their role. Her signature work and breakthrough innovation are her meticulous blue and white ink brushwork on toilet paper, reminiscent of Chinese blue and white porcelain motifs.
WHY WE LOVE IT
Some of Hui’s works in this exhibition depict famous real-life and fictional art personalities: Van Gogh, Magritte and Vermeer as well as the latter’s Girl with a Pearl Earring. They are portrayed with face masks and are surrounded by coveted pandemic items, such as hand sanitisers and alcohol wipes. Hui’s new LED installation – the most instagram-worthy work of the exhibition – is also showcased, portraying a group of hands holding more pandemic items. Her works are humourously relevant to our COVID-19 concerns!
