Mark Bradford: Exotica

September 26, 2024 - March 1, 2025
Mark Bradford

WHAT
The respected Los Angeles-based artist is known for his large-scale abstract paintings crafted from paper, delving into the complexities of social and political structures that marginalise communities. His work challenges objectifying societal norms and fosters social engagement by bringing art to underserved communities. With a collection of works that use innovative staining techniques, the exhibition introduces around 20 new paintings, expanding his explorations and focusing on colonialism and ‘otherness’ through individual experiences.

WHY
By showcasing a signature staining method using caulk to create ethereal imprints, 5 large-scale figurative pieces featuring the agave plant infuse fantasy and memory into his compositions, while the other 15 detailed works take viewers into the woods — the woods of the artist’s imagination. The show exemplifies the artist’s evolving figural expressions through diverse forms and materials, including fabric dye and oxidised paper. The body of work marks a significant shift in his perspective, inviting viewers to engage intimately with the narratives of the ‘exotic’ within his art.

Mark Bradford and Hauser & Wirth Learning are also collaborating on a social initiative critical to the exhibition. In partnership with the Bridge+, a local social enterprise in Hong Kong, there is a learning programme accompanying the exhibition, which engages with a group of young people, aged 16 – 18, from the Sham Shui Po neighborhood.
