Portraits
WHAT
The Japanese sculptor’s works are infused with solitary visions and moments, turning vague images in his mind into tangible beings for others to observe, imagine, and perceive: Silent and bulging heads, figures with their arms raised like praying figures, monumental middle figures extended upwards, anthropomorphic vases, children, animals, soils, and bronzes. His work blurs the lines between art and craft, and he transfers the unique tactile sensation experienced during the ceramic-making process onto the two-dimensional mediums that are also showcased in this exhibition.
WHY
Viewers will find themselves amidst characters and ‘little monsters’ birthed from Otani’s imagination, traversing the worlds that he has conjured for each soul. Art lovers will surely appreciate Otani’s unwavering loyalty towards his own perceptions, which allow him to break free from the increasingly rigid cage formed by knowledge, systems, and education in reality.
