Epistrophes and Heads
WHAT
Recent paintings by the British painter are presented at his 5th solo show at the gallery’s Hong Kong location. The exhibition showcases the artist’s latest series, ‘Epistrophes’, where he explores the multitude of abstract possibilities that are inspired by a singular tree that he encountered over many winters at home. Also showcased are the artist’s iconic, abstract ‘Heads’ paintings. These series together give audiences the opportunity to ponder the many interlinked parts of the human form.
WHY
Viewers are treated to the artist’s iconic use of charcoal and self-produced acrylic paints. He intensely puts these mediums onto raw canvas or paper on the floor of his studio. In the process, he keeps the splinters and charcoal dust on the surface of the works in order to provide a dynamic look to the paintings. Each subject is portrayed as a vigorous life force.
