M+ Sign Collection: Another Story
WHAT
The exhibition visually examines the styles and practices of contemporary Chinese art since the 1990s. Though the inaugural exhibition of the collection was organised through a chronological, socio-political lens, the exhibition is based around the cultural identities of the artists. It surveys how artists reconsidered these identities and expressed the uncertainty during the rapid modernisation in China in the 1990s. The array of works showcase overflowing visuals, ambiguous meanings, transitory obsessions, and traditional interpretations.
WHY
The Sigg Collection at M+ is one of the world’s largest comprehensive collections of contemporary Chinese art. The exhibition is the second of three planned exhibitions of the said collection. It strives to offer new perspectives on understanding the contemporary Chinese art form by basing its visual language around artists who aim for self-presence. A must-see for all fans of Chinese contemporary art.
