The Shape of Time

June 8, 2023 - August 31, 2023

WHAT
The group exhibition, featuring artists who have all lived or studied abroad, explores how time becomes an important factor during an artist’s creative process. It explores the progressive utopian ideal that has been prevalent in the West since the 1970s and 80s. Using rhetorical means from their life experiences after being exposed to both Eastern and Western influences to express the ‘shape of time’ that is formed in their inner worlds, featured artists include Zhu Jinshi, Ni Zhiqi, Wang Xiaosong, Chen Yufan, Ren Ri, and Zhu Peihong.

WHY
Accelerating geopolitical division and development of globalisation have caused a conflict between multiple historical narratives. History therefore consists of multiple perspectives depending on the circumstances, not being limited to a singular viewpoint. For example, while the West emphasises logical and rational thinking, the East places a higher value on feelings and intuition due to traditional Eastern philosophy, which leads to a completely different aesthetic. Viewers are invited to see how both Eastern and Western influences combine in this insightful exhibition.
