The World of Yesterday
WHAT
Through her 7 series of 33 works that are representative of her portfolio since 2020, the Chinese contemporary artist hopes to convey the dilemma of human existence. The works involving female topics include those paying homage to the Bronte Sisters and Virginia Woolf, all of whom she empathises with. Works from 2022-2023 are also presented; these tell stories about humans and the artist’s reflections on a shared history. Hu also takes the role of director and screenwriter, as she explores different media such as painting installations and stage plays.
WHY
The artist’s study of oil painting gives her works a classical quality. At the core of these works is a literary and philosophical spirit, as she explores common difficulties shared by humanity in our current world. Her works are centred around texts, stories, dramas, and films. In this particular exhibition, she focuses on loss, hope, fear, love, death, blossoming, freedom, life, and living. While some works deal with female topics, the exhibition itself describes the holistic experience of being a human, which audiences are sure to appreciate.
