The Myth of the Lobster Planet

June 17, 2023 - October 15, 2023

WHAT
Co-organised by Pearl Lam Galleries and COEXIST, the British artist’s first exhibition in South China showcases over 40 works from his career in the mediums of painting, sculpture, video, furniture design, as well as in the form of a giant installation. Exploring contemporary pop culture and how it relates to art history, he pays tribute to the masters of classicism, pop art, and surrealism. In particular, the Lobster is reborn into different time periods and settings – in Van Gogh’s sunflowers, Duchamp’s urinals, and Any Warhol’s flowers. In addition, Colbert’s sculptures emphasise the importance of art being for everyone. By ‘breaking’ through elitism, his works allow for more people to see and appreciate contemporary art.

WHY
Though the artist is a leading figure in the New Pop Art movement, he looks back to the Pop Art movement of the 1960s for inspiration. He reinvents the genre by referencing pop culture, consumerism, historical references, and mythological motifs – called ‘Neo Pop Surrealism.’ Audiences are sure to appreciate the artist’s mastery of pop art with references to other periods and artists, and at the same time feel welcomed by his immersive installations.
