Retrograde
WHAT
The exhibition examines a variety of issues with regards to lesbian and gay culture vis-a-vis heteronormative society. The exhibition includes eleven different artists from eight different nationalities who reside in seven different countries, each expressing a different experience. The name of the exhibition is inspired by the retrograde motion of planets, which is often thought of as unusual or deviating from the norm, thus symbolising the queer experience within society.
WHY
Curated by Cusson Cheng, this exhibition is not only for those entrenched in queer culture, but is also for those questioning the status of society. Why are norms so heteronormative? What influences come from queer culture? The exhibition poses a variety of questions and allows the viewer to explore potential responses in a multitude of mediums from flowers to sculptures. The artists also examine the concerns that accompany queer modernity in a way that gives catharsis to queer viewers and raises questions for those not involved in the culture.
