WHAT
Spanish-born and based in Puerto-Rico, Lerma is a multi-media artist focused primarily on portraiture. In his first solo exhibition in China, Lerma presents a series of new paintings with a unique artistic process: loading copious amounts of paint onto a canvas but using only three to ten brushstrokes per piece to depicts static portraits of his subjects from the side or front. Despite the somewhat simplistic sounding process, Lerma’s works require careful planning and the successful execution of his portraits showcase his talent and abilities.

WHY
Contrary to general thinking, in reality the few marks and fast-drying paint thickened with gels require careful planning. While the artist no doubt spends numerous hours planning the execution of his works, the idea that he only uses three to ten brushstrokes makes his audience look at his paintings from a totally new perspective. His current portrait paintings also give whole new meaning to the word ‘portrait’, frustrating his audience with the lack of distinctive facial features and character traits. Indeed, each work might be titled after the first name of the sitter, but that is all. Though based on specific people, the portraits are simplified to the point that likeness becomes indeterminate, prolonging the viewer’s gaze.
