WHAT
Born in the Jilin Province and based in Shanghai, Zhang is known for a practice that can be described as an epistemological self-outreach. This exhibition features over 50 paintings and site-specific installations of the artist’s recent works created by the space of lines, the space of objects, and the space of abstract figures. The gallery also features a double-helix staircase, which adds dimension to Zhang’s exhibition as the museum begins to appear as a two-way mirror, joining the chaotic world and the normal one.
WHY
Many of the works on display come from the first decade in the new millennium where artists abandoned the bodily harshness of portraits and focused more on objects, containers, and cords as the main subject of art. Zhang specifically focuses on creating softer and more subtle works, highlighting details of urban life. The exhibition is stunningly showcased in the Tadao Ando-designed building.
