WHAT
The acclaimed British artist has built a career through his synthesis of Pop Art, Minimalism and popular graphic design. As his first solo exhibition in southern China, the presentation is the the world premiere of his latest virtual reality work, alongside a series of sculptures arranged on plinths, with portraits and landscapes displayed on the gallery walls. Scenes from Opie’s works are represented in both reality and virtual reality, depicting the interconnectivity of the urban environment.
WHY
From highly stylised animation of human figures to simple colour palettes with bold lines, Opie’s art is a presentation of the language of everyday vocabulary. In the gallery’s expansive space, viewers feels as if they are in a familiar world of ‘people’ walking around town, while also taking small but telling steps into the virtual realm. These real and virtual reality works are interwoven to resonate with the viewer, guiding them to enter into a new existence through a variety of sensory inputs – sound, touch, balance, and vision.
